Le maïs: céréale la plus cultivée au Cameroun

Le  maïs, de son appellation scientifique Zea mays saccharata (famille des Poacées anciennement appelées Graminées) est un aliment riche en glucides et en fibres, mais aussi de Calories, Protéines, Lipides, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphore, Vitamine B1, Vitamine B9 et de Lutéine Zéaxanthine+++. 

   Le maïs est la céréale la plus cultivée au Cameroun, est consommé régulièrement par quelque 12 millions de personnes, soit les deux tiers de la population. C’est la principale source de revenus de plus de trois millions de petits exploitants camerounais. Le maïs compose également 70 pour cent des aliments pour volaille.

La production du maïs demeure très faible au Cameroun. Avec quelque 700.000 exploitations familiales, artisanales et modernes, une production d’environ 1,1 tonne et une consommation nationale de 700.000 tonnes, le maïs est la troisième denrée alimentaire produite au Cameroun après le manioc et la banane plantain. Il contribue également pour plus de 150 milliards fcfa au Produit intérieur brut (PIB). Le gouvernement a mis en place  le Programme national d’appui à la filière maïs (PNAFM) avec pour objectif, l’augmentation de la production national de cette denrée de l’ordre de 40.000 tonnes par an.
