En 2018, la société des plantations du Haut de Penja (PHP) n’a récolté que 12 tonnes de poivre blanc contre 42 tonnes les années précédentes du fait des champignons qui rongent les racines.

Selon le responsable de production de la PHP, Jules Kamdem, les champignons déciment les plantations notamment les racines des poivriers. D’après lui, si rien n’est fait rapidement le poivre de penja risque de disparaître à moins que les plantations ne soient délocalisées d’après des chercheurs.

Les superficies servant à la  production du poivre de penja dans cette unité agro-industrielle ont été réduites de moitié, elles passent de 40 hectares il y a quelques années à 21 hectares de nos jours.

Malgré tous ces malheurs, le poivre de penja a reçu en mai 2018 son label de qualité faisant passer le prix du kilogramme de 2500 Fcfa à 14.000 FCFA de ce poivre qui fait le bonheur des cuisiniers à travers le monde. Il est donc capital de sauver le poivre de penja de ces horribles champignons.
